Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is a select or travel team?
Select (or travel) soccer is an opportunity for recreational soccer players to continue the growth of their soccer skills in an increasingly competitive environment while still placing an emphasis on development. As the name implies, players are selected annually for teams based on the abilities they demonstrate in structured try-outs. Try-outs are scheduled in June for teams expecting to start play in the fall. All players try-out every year regardless of whether they have played on a select team before. Select teams typically travel farther than recreation level teams. The GVSA league area is larger than the GLCSL area. Select teams are also likely to register for one or more tournaments which may require travel outside of our normal playing area (possibly requiring overnight stays). A commitment to a select team is for a full year (fall and spring). Select teams normally expect a greater commitment to practices - starting earlier before the season starts and often scheduled more frequently. This is necessary to be competitive and grow the higher levels of soccer skills needed for the select program league. Select teams stay together over the winter break and often continue practice or participate in indoor leagues together.
  • What leagues do you play in?
West Coast United teams participate in the following leagues: - Grand Valley Soccer Association (GVSA). GVSA teams are available from U7 to U19. - Michigan State Premier Soccer Program (MSPSP). MSPSP teams are available from U13 to U19. - United Soccer League - Youth (USL-Y). USL-Y teams are summer-only and have teams available from U11 to U19. Each league schedules their own games and sets their own rules. Please visit the leagues' websites for more information.
  • When are tryouts?
Tryouts are typically in June. Dates will be announced here and on our Facebook Page.
  • Where are tryouts?
Tryouts are held at our home fields behind Reeths-Puffer Central Elementary School. The address is: 1911 W Giles Road, Muskegon, Michigan 49445.
  • Is there a cost to tryout?
There is no cost for tryouts. In fact, we encourage all players interested in growing their skills to tryout for a Select team. Regardless of acceptance onto a Select team, this will be a valuable experience for players of all abilities.
  • What is the cost if I make a team?
Fees for 2024/2025: Select Full Year: $400 Select Half Year: $300 Premier Full Year: $550 Premier Half Year: $400 USL-Y Fees for 2025: TBD Please be aware that these costs do not include the cost of uniforms, tournaments, or winter play (indoor or futsal).
  • What should I expect at a tryout?
Be prepared to demonstrate your best at all times during the tryout session. Come prepared as you would for a game (cleats, shin guards, water and appropriate ball). Although your soccer skills on the field are obviously important, coaches and their assistants will also be looking for examples of good sportsmanship, ethics, communication with your fellow players, coaches and officials. We will be looking for players who are willing to listen and grow. You can improve your chances for selection if you can demonstrate your ability to play in more than one position. There are a lot of useful guides on the internet to help a player understand what is expected at a tryout.
